Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
- Direct all aspects of terminal operations, including vessel loading and discharge, gate operations, yard management, equipment deployment, rail operations, and container logistics.
- Ensure efficient utilization of labor, equipment, and terminal infrastructure to maximize throughput and productivity.
- Establish and monitor operational performance metrics including berth productivity, crane productivity, truck turn times, gate velocity, dwell time, and vessel schedule adherence.
- Lead operational planning to support customer growth, peak season demand, and network expansion.
Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Maintain a world-class safety culture with zero-injury objectives.
- Ensure compliance with OSHA, USCG, DHS, TWIC, EPA, FMC, and local port authority requirements.
- Lead emergency preparedness, business continuity, and incident response programs.
- Conduct regular safety reviews and drive corrective actions to eliminate workplace risks.
Labor Relations
- Build and maintain productive relationships with union leadership and represented employees.
- Partner with labor representatives to resolve operational issues, grievances, and workforce concerns.
- Ensure consistent administration of collective bargaining agreements.
- Support workforce planning, scheduling, training, and succession development.
Financial Management
- Develop and manage annual operating and capital budgets.
- Drive productivity improvements and cost optimization initiatives.
- Oversee terminal P&L performance and achieve revenue, margin, and expense targets.
- Evaluate and prioritize capital investment opportunities in equipment, technology, and terminal infrastructure.
Equipment & Maintenance Management
- Ensure reliability and availability of cranes, RTGs, top picks, forklifts, terminal tractors, and support equipment.
- Oversee preventive and predictive maintenance programs.
- Support long-term asset management and replacement strategies.
Customer & Commercial Support
- Maintain strong relationships with ocean carriers, trucking providers, beneficial cargo owners, rail partners, and port stakeholders.
- Support commercial teams in customer retention and business development initiatives.
- Lead service recovery efforts and ensure consistent execution of customer commitments.
People Leadership
- Lead and develop terminal management teams across operations, maintenance, engineering, safety, security, and administration.
- Create a high-performance culture focused on accountability, continuous improvement, and employee development.
- Identify and develop future leaders through coaching and succession planning.
Continuous Improvement & Technology
- Drive Lean, Six Sigma, and process improvement initiatives.
- Champion terminal operating systems (TOS), automation technologies, and digital transformation efforts.
- Utilize operational analytics to improve productivity, safety, and profitability.
Qualifications
Education & Credentials:
- Bachelor’s degree in business, transportation or a related field; or a combination of post-high school and equal experience may be substituted for education.
- MBA preferred.
Experience:
10+ years business management experience in related maritime area. May require international business experience.
Technical Skills:
Proficient with Microsoft Office products, including Word, Outlook, PowerPoint and Excel.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, including conveying technical information to technical and non-technical users. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal/external business partners. Ability to evaluate process effectiveness and develop change or alternatives.
